History

The year 1966 marked a significant moment for spiritual seekers in Singapore. It was during this year that H.H. Swami Chinmayananda (PujyaGurudev) graced the land of Singapore for the first time, bestowing a series of lectures in both Malaysia and Singapore. Through his uniquely logical and unparalleled approach, he ignited a sense of curiosity for spirituality within the audience, unravelling the core essence of the dynamic facet of Hinduism. The sacred flame of spiritual longing that the great Master ignited continues to radiate even today. In Singapore, those pursuing spiritual growth express their deep gratitude and respect, commemorating his boundless compassion that brought the timeless wisdom of Vedanta to their very doorsteps.

Commencing the Journey: First Gita Jnana Yajna and Inaugural Balavihar Class

Ushered by the benevolent saint’s blessings, the wheels of progress were set in motion. Driven by inspiration, devoted individuals formed the Chinmaya Committee and extended an invitation to Gurudev to lead Singapore’s inaugural Gita Jnana Yajna in 1967. During this visit, Gurudev underscored the significance of initiating Balavihar Classes for youngsters to the earnest devotees. Consequently, in 1968, the Chinmaya Balavihar class was inaugurated in Singapore. This pivotal initiative, undertaken by the Chinmaya Committee, commenced with a modest inception involving 2 sevikas and 7 children.

In the subsequent year, 1969, on the first anniversary of the Chinmaya Movement in Singapore, the attendance in Balavihar classes burgeoned from 7 to 60 children, encompassing two additional branches. PujyaGurudev expressed delight at this growth and affectionately conveyed an inspiring message to the Balavihar children, extending his appreciation to the parents who recognized the value of enrolling their children in these classes.

Since then, Chinmaya Centre in Singapore has orchestrated numerous Gita Jnana Yajnas, featuring different Swamis from the mission. The Balavihar initiative has flourished, now encompassing more than 200 children under the nurturing guidance of around 25 sevikas, marking a remarkable journey of growth and care.
